  8. FARALLON SHIPS PORTABLE PACK: LIVE FROM CAIRO, IT'S THE "SWISS ARMY NETWORK"

  10. Emeryville, CA--February 15, 1990--Farallon Computing, Inc. today
  11. announced the company is shipping the Farallon Portable Pack™, a canvas
  12. portfolio containing a set of hardware and software for the Apple Macintosh®
  13. Portable with all the tools necessary to connect the Macintosh Portable to your
  14. office machine from home, from another office, or from a hotel in Egypt.
  15.    “We were in the Cairo Hilton,” said Mike Cerre, executive producer and
  16. correspondent with GLOBE Tv.  “We came in as an innocent television team trying
  17. to send information back to San Francisco.  When we took out our little black
  18. bag from Farallon, they thought we were some type of secret service
  19. organization.”
  20.    Cerre was in Cairo competing in the “Human Race,” a three-week scavenger hun
  21. and race around the world.  Cerre had with him a camera crew, a Macintosh
  22. Portable and the Farallon Portable Pack.
  23.     “I think we looked a little more sophisticated than we should have,” he
  24. said.  After assuring the hotel staff they were well-intentioned reporters
  25. working on a tight deadline, they were allowed to continue.  “Using the plugs
  26. and jacks in the Farallon Portable Pack, we were able to dial through and
  27. establish a link to San Francisco.
  28.    “As a traveling correspondent, I need a direct interface with the producers
  29. back in San Francisco,” said Cerre.  “To to sit in a telephone booth in Cairo
  30. or Luxor and be able to rewrite a script on the same screen with a writer in
  31. San Francisco, receive new information or update travel arrangements is
  32. essential for our speed and accuracy.”
  33.    Farallon’s “Swiss Army network” is the ultimate Macintosh tool for executive
  34. sales people, accountants, reporters and others on the go.  The Portable Pack
  35. allows Macintosh Portables equipped with modems to connect to a home office
  36. machine or another LAN.  With Timbuktu/Remote™, Farallon’s screen sharing and
  37. file transfer software, users can control the home office machine, transfer
  38. files, or work together with another machine on a document.
  39.    The Portable Pack comes complete with two copies each of Farallon’s Timbuktu
  40. and Timbuktu/Remote screen sharing and file transfer software, two PhoneNET®
  41. StarConnectors™ and necessary accessories, such as telephone cables, extra
  42. modular cable extenders, a screw driver and pocket knife.  The Portable Pack
  43. fits conveniently in the Macintosh Portable carrying bag.
  44.    “We designed the Portable Pack for today’s mobile executive who travels with
  45. his or her Mac.  It gives you all the materials you need to stay in touch with
  46. your office when you’re on the road,” said Thomas P. Rielly, Farallon director
  47. of marketing.  “We even include a bottle opener — something you can never seem
  48. to find in a hotel room.”  Farallon’s Portable Pack is compatible with all
  49. Macintosh computers and recommended for use with the Macintosh Plus, SE, SE/30,
  50. IIcx models or any model that people transport.  The Portable Pack also works
  51. with the DynaMac®, Colby WalkMac™, and Wallaby Systems’ Outbound™.  A modem is
  52. required to use Timbuktu/Remote.
  53.    The Portable Pack carries a suggested retail price of $495 and is available
  54. Farallon resellers.  Individual pieces sold separately retail for more than
  55. $860.  In the United States, Portable Pack is distributed by Ingram/MicroD,
  56. Softsel and MicroAmerica.
